Passivation Overview
Passivation is a chemical treatment that enhances the corrosion resistance of metals such as stainless steel. It removes free iron and other surface contaminants and promotes a protective passive oxide layer. Unlike coating or plating, stainless steel passivation typically uses an acid solution, such as nitric or citric acid, without applying a separate coating.
- Corrosion resistance:
Passivation helps reduce susceptibility to corrosion.
- Cleaner surfaces:
The treatment removes free iron and other surface contaminants from stainless steel.
- Surface appearance:
The process typically produces no significant visual change.
- Applications:
Passivated parts are used in aerospace, automotive, medical, and electronics applications.
